Maryport Rugby League Club B

The new season of the Maryport Pool League began on Thursday night with 16 teams hoping to claim the title.

Last year’s league ko winners Maryport Bowling Club took on the Sun Inn Cannons and strolled to a comfortable 6-1 victory.

There were wins for Anthony Brough, Mike McCallig and Dave Edwards in the singles with Sun’s Tommi Allan beating Jason Miller to make it 3-1 going into the doubles where the Bowlers won all three to get their season off to a flyer.

League leaders last season were the Sun Inn Sharks and they took on Maryport Rugby League Club B who turned up with a full squad and took the lead 1-0.

Kieran Scott beat David Wilson in a frame the Aspatria player never got into.

The Sharks captain Mel Scott levelled the game before Jobby Dunn made it 2-1 to the Aspatria side .

Ryan Bedford then made it 3-1 and it seemed just a matter of time until the game was over and this proved to be the case as Wilson and Scott secured the win.

Dunn and Bedford made it five before Wilson and Scott wrapped it up in the final double for 6-1 on the night, But it could have been a lot closer with MRLC B missing a few chances from winning positions.

Butchers B hosted the Sun Inn Ballers and it was the Ballers who took control as Gary Miller, Greg Todd and Willy Armstrong put them 3-0 up before Lee Hodgson beat Johnny Gray to give Butchers hope of a fight back.

That was shortlived as Miller and Todd won the first and third double to clinch a 5-2 victory while Sam Winter and Hodgson won the second double.

Swan took on Butchers A and after the singles it was all square at 2-2. Kevin Gartland  and Lee Volkaerts for Butchers while the Swan singles winners were Gareth Pattinson and Mathew Little.

Butchers then won all the doubles through Gary Anderson and Gartland, Lee Ferguson and George Close and Gartland and Volkaerts to wrap up a 5-2 victory.

Elbra B played Elbra A and it was the A team that came out on top winning 4-3. Pat Walton, Tony Lambert and Jason Thompson won before Thompson and Walton clinched the victory.

Elbra have three teams this season and the C team faced Grasslot Welfare where they were 3-1 behind after the singles. David McCracken won for Elbra while Barry Shearman, Keith Anderson and Trevor Bethwaite were victorious for Grasslot.

Grasslot took two of the three doubles – Barry and Richard Shearman with the first, Anderson and Bethwaite with the second to finish 5-2 winners on the night. Darren Rowley and Paul Devlin were the consolation winners for Elbra.

Glasson Rangers hosted Sun Inn, Dearham and the away side took the first frame through Blake Miller before the home side turned the game though winning three on the spin.

Miller and Calum Casson then made it 3-2 before Glasson grabbed the victory from a 4-3 win on the night.

Maryport ARLFC took on Maryport Social and it ended in a 5-2 victory for the Social Club.

Stephen Ismay took the first frame before Doc Holliday levelled 1-1 but it soon became 3-1 to the Social club via Ryan Ismay and Egan.

Holliday and Dale Dickinson won a consolation double as the Social Club wrapped up the game at 5-2 through Henderson and Egan and Ismay and Holm.
