Kendal is bidding to be named the UK’s first ever Town of Culture in 2028.
If it is successful, it would unlock £3 million for the South Cumbrian town to put on a programme of arts and cultural activity.
The bid is being co-ordinated by the Kendal Town of Culture Partnership.
It has launched a survey to ask people about their thoughts on Kendal’s bid and what the programme could look like if it was successful.
Caz Graham, chair of the partnership, said: “This competition is about celebrating the unique stories of the UK’s towns and we think Kendal has so much to shout about.
“We’ve a gloriously rich history and heritage, a proven track record for delivering first rate, successful and popular arts events.
“The initial results from our survey show there’s a real appetite in the town for this bid and for more arts for everyone.
“Kendal hasn’t benefited from some of the Government funding that’s helped boost culture and arts in other parts of the county and we think the investment Town of Culture would bring could make a huge difference.
“It’s well recognised that culture matters; it’s good for the soul, makes people happier, helps build communities and could do wonders for bringing renewed energy, life and purpose to our town centre, as well boosting our sense of pride in Kendal itself.”
Kendal College students are involved in designing a logo for the Town of Culture partnership.
The partnership will submit the bid towards the end of next month and, if successful, will progress to the next stage and receive £60,000 to develop its plans further.
A free artist-led sessions for families will take place from 1pm to 4pm at the Sandylands Methodist Church on Saturday giving everyone a chance to get creative, and share ideas about what Kendal Town of Culture might look like.
Anyone completing the online survey will also be entered into a prize draw for a chance to win £100.
The partnership has been supported with funding from Kendal Town Council.
