Workington Reds boss Billy Barr still hasn’t given up on beating tonight’s signing deadline in the Northern Premier League.
Following the loss of loanees Daniel Ogwuru and Luke Hunter, Barr signed former Reds striker Matty Tymon from Whitby Town.
However he is still trying to add to the squad and said: “We have a couple of things bubbling away so we will just have to see what happens before tonight.”
Ogwuru got his first start for Morecambe last night since he returned to the club and was given 72 minutes.
The Shrimps were twice ahead, and were still leading 2-1 when Ogwuru went off but Hartlepool levelled soon after and scored the winner three minutes from time.
Hunter was brought on at half-time for Fylde at Worksop on Saturday but the National North leaders were beaten 1-0 and now only have a point advantage over nearest challengers South Shields.
Reds are on an eight-match unbeaten run with three draws and five wins, but face a stiff test on Saturday when they entertain promotion-chasing Hednesford.
They currently lie third in the table but along with Hebburn are only a point behind leaders FC United of Manchester.
Reds and FC United lead the way in the Premier Division’s form table and both urgently need the three points on Saturday for different reasons.
Ahead of the game Barr said: “They are a very experienced team with lots of pace and dangerous from set pieces so again it’s going to be a good test for us.”
Surprisingly Hednesford parted company with their manager six weeks ago. Gavin Hurren and assistant Lee Vaughan were axed despite sitting level on points at the top of the table on goal difference and having lost just one of their previous 10 league games. They had also clinched promotion the previous season.
During an illustrious playing career across the EFL and the Premier League, new boss Kelvin Davis represented Luton Town, Wimbledon, Ipswich Town, Sunderland and Southampton.
He made more than 600 career appearances, with over 270 coming during a decade at Southampton between 2006 and 2016.
Assistant Danny Butterfield made more than 200 appearances for Crystal Palace between 2002 and 2010 and also played for Southampton from 2010 to 2013.
Chairman Craig Gwilt described the decision as one of the most difficult he has had to make since taking over at the club, but said a change was necessary to meet their ambitions as they chase back-to-back promotions.
