Uppies took first blood in the Good Friday game of the 2026 Uppies & Downies series in Workington.

The mass no rules football game dates back hundreds of years in the town.

The town divides into two and Uppies have to get the ball to Workington Hall and Downies have to get the ball to Workington Harbour.

The ball was thrown off from the concrete bridge at The Cloffocks at 6.30pm and Andy Hunter , 19, of Distington, hailed it for the Uppies at around 11.05pm.

There are two more games in the series on Easter Tuesday and the following Saturday, so it is all to play for.

You can find out all about its history here and find out who has hailed the ball over the years here in our hall of fame.

We’ll be covering the forthcoming games live too, and you can see Good Friday’s game as it happened below.
