Barrow by-election candidates confirmed

Candidates for the upcoming by-election in Barrow have been announced.

The vote will be held on June 4 following the resignation of former councillor Niyall Phillips, who left to pursue a career in Australia.

Cllr Phillips vacated the seats of Hawcoat and Newbarns on Westmorland and Furness Council, and Hawcoat on Barrow Town Council.

Westmorland and Furness Council has announced the candidates who will be fighting it out to claim the seat next month, after nominations closed on Thursday, May 7.

Candidates for the Hawcoat and Newbarns ward, Westmorland & Furness Council

  • Rebekah Atkinson, Green Party
  • Hazel Edwards, Reform UK
  • Marco Fawcett, Conservatives
  • Mike Leach, Labour
  • Stephen Pickthall, Liberal Democrat

Candidates for the Hawcoat ward on Barrow Town Council

  • Terry Assouad, Labour
  • Hazel Edwards, Reform UK
  • Marco Fawcett, Conservatives

Voting for both elections will take place between 7am and 10pm on Thursday June 4.

Eligible residents who are not yet registered to vote must do so by midnight on May 18 at https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

To vote by post, cancel or amend a postal vote, people must apply to do so by 5pm on Tuesday May 19.

Apply for a postal vote at https://www.gov.uk/apply-postal-vote

Voters who wish to vote by proxy must apply to do so by 5pm on Wednesday May 27. Apply at https://www.gov.uk/apply-proxy-vote

Anyone who does not have photo ID, which is now a legal requirement, can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate by 5pm on Wednesday, May 27 at https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-photo-id-voter-authority-certificate
