Workington Comets will once again host the Jay Cartmell Memorial Meeting.
Jay, who died in September 2024 aged eight, was a huge Comets and football fan and someone who left a lasting impression on so many people.
If Jay wasn’t at Northside on a speedway bike pursuing his dream of becoming a rider, he would more than likely be pulling on the boots and turning out for Whitehaven Miners.
Following the success of last year’s event, the format will once again remain as a four-team tournament, with Jay’s favourite video game, Fortnite, continuing to provide the inspiration behind the team names — Midas’ Meteors, Ragnarok’s Racers, Blaze’s Bandits and Deadfire’s Demons.
It will be held on Saturday June 27 from 3pm.
There will be a twist where the reserves race now becomes an 8-rider 6-Heat Pairs format: 1 v 2, 3 v 4, 1 v 3, 2 v 4, 1 v 4, 2 v 3.
Supporters will also once again have the opportunity to become a team manager for the day through the meeting sponsorship packages and play their own part in what promises to be another special occasion.
Also a range of sponsorship packages are also available, giving supporters and businesses the opportunity to be part of what promises to be another special and memorable occasion in Jay’s honour.
In addition fans who bring both their Oxford (June 13) and Glasgow (June 20) admission tickets from the two upcoming home Comets fixtures, will be entitled to receive a free programme on entry to the memorial meeting.
Those who have season tickets will also receive a programme on entry.
Last year’s inaugural event was an incredibly emotional and memorable day for everyone involved.
Despite difficult weather conditions towards the end of the meeting, the support shown by riders, volunteers, sponsors and supporters ensured the event was a huge success and a fitting tribute to Jay.

Jay’s parents Leigha and James and the promotion are already working hard behind the scenes to put together a competitive and entertaining rider line-up across all four teams, with more details and team announcements expected very soon.
Leigha said: “We are delighted to be hosting another memorial meeting for our beautiful boy Jay.
“I know he would have been extremely proud of last year’s event and what it became. Even though the weather came against us towards the end, every rider involved was an absolute pleasure to deal with and everyone pulled together to make it so special.
“Our thanks must go to the promotion for accommodating the meeting within such a busy fixture schedule, and also a huge thank you to everyone who has already sponsored, donated and provided prizes so far — but we need more support to help make this year’s event even bigger and better.
“Putting on a meeting like this comes with significant costs and every bit of support, no matter how big or small, genuinely makes a difference.
“We’re hopefully going to be in a position very soon to announce riders and potentially full teams that will be available to sponsor and we can’t wait to share that news.
“Last year showed just how much Jay meant to people and we’d love to see that support once again as we come together to celebrate his life doing something he loved.”
Details of the fundraising opportunities can be found on the official Workington Comets website.
