Carlisle Cycling Association welcomed nearly 100 young riders aged four to 16 to the Cycle Circuit in Harraby on Saturday.
Families travelled from all over the region and beyond to take part in Round 5 of this year’s North West Youth Cycling League.
The weather had a big effect on the day with winds gusting over 30mph making conditions tough, with the younger riders in particular struggling into the strong head wind along the back straight.
There were some very gutsy performances across all age groups though and all the riders can be proud of their efforts.
A strong contingent of riders from the Isle of Man took a number of podium positions, including wins from George Looney, Poppy Clayton and Tommy Bass.
Visitors from the North East also impressed with Heather Bailie of Tyneside Vagabonds and Theo Carter of Manilla Cycling winning the U12 races whilst Lewis Anderson riding for Shibden Apex RT took a convincing victory in the U16 boys’ race.
Regular riders at the CCA evening series, Scots Skye Stewart and Izzy Barbour put their familiarity with the Circuit to good use as they won their age groups.
North Cheshire Clarion’s Finlay Smith ended the U8 boys’ race on the top step of the podium and there was plenty of local interest in the younger age groups, notably victory for Lorton’s Mieke van Schelven in the U10 girls’ race and third place for Lakeland Sprinters rider Rhona Livesey in the U8 girls.
But cycling was the true winner of the day with an event full of fun, friendship and good natured competition from all the young people.
The league moves on to Preston next but there is more racing for youngsters at Carlisle this Thursday evening and newcomers are always welcome.
