Workington Reds are back on top of the NPL West table tonight after three days in second place.
For while they were fighting back to win 3-1 at Glossop rivals Mossley who had taken over on goal difference, were losing 3-0 at home to Warrington Rylands.
It wasnt a positive display in the first 45 minutes but a more intense effort after a half time change of personnel and system, did the trick.
Glossop worked extremely hard to close down Reds in the first half and deserved their half time lead. They had already spurned two good chances before going in front on 12 minutes with a spectacular 25-yard strike from Sam Bennett.
Although Reds did improve later in the half they could only manage two long range strikes from Conor Tinnion and Conor Gaul which failed to trouble goalkeeper Henry Allen.
There was immediately more intensity about Workington’s play in the second half and the pressure began to build.
Three goals in a seven minute spell midway through the half involving their two best players Tinnion and Steven Rigg swung it completely their way.
Rigg found his skipper to score from close range and then produced a deep cross which was headed in by Tinnion – only the third headed goal of his career.
Then on 76 minutes Tinnion was tripped in the box and Rigg scored from the spot.
Reds comfortably saw out the rest of the game to stretch their unbeaten League run to 11 games.
