A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a wildfire near Newby Bridge.

Police have confirmed that the 31-year-old man is currently in custody.

Just before 6pm on Saturday, March 19, Sedbergh’s specialist wildfire team was mobilised to a wildfire just off the A590 near Newby Bridge.

The fellside was well alight and crews were initially deployed to attack the flanks and prevent the fire from spreading to woodlands and continued to fight the fire for a number of hours.

Specialist teams from across the county were also called to tackle the blaze.

The A590 was closed for a period of time due to safety concerns.

Police are keen for anyone with any information to report it online at www.cumbria.police.uk/reportit quoting incident number 212 of March 19 or call 101.

Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
