Carlisle Cricket Club is mourning the death of a popular former chairman, Phil Potter.
He was chairman of the Edenside club in the early to mid-70s when he was playing for and skippering the club’s 2nd team in the Cumberland Senior League.
Chris Packham, a friend and former team-mate, said: “Phil was a larger than life character and great company to be with. He was a big pal after I joined the club in 1973.
“He had a building firm in Carlisle and he was instrumental in taking charge and organising the members to carry out many of the structural changes that took place around that time.
“These included the addition of the changing block and store room extension which happened about the same time.
“He was 2nd team captain while I was playing and occasionally would be called up to the first team.”
Mark Davidson, the Carlisle secretary said: “It was with much sadness that we heard of Phil’s passing. As well as being a former club chairman he was also an honorary life member.
“All of us at the club send condolences to Phil’s family and friends.”
Phil’s funeral will take place at Carlisle Crematorium on Friday October 14 at 11am then afterwards at Edenside.
