The record books have been trawled, scores checked and it has now been confirmed Workington were the first team to hit nine goals in a Cumberland County Cup final.
Tuesday’s 9-1 win over Penrith in the Fred Conway County Cup final at Brunton Park, Carlisle was the highest score in a final over the competition’s 138-year history.
There had been an eight scored on two previous occasions – 1887 by the original Workington and in 2013 by Carlisle United.
So Ben Hughes’ hat-trick goal five minutes from the end created a new record for the final.
It was the first time the Cumberland Cup trophy had taken on the Fred Conway attachment in memory and tribute to the former county chairman who died suddenly last November, leaving a deep void in the county game.
Fred’s family were guests at the Brunton Park final and a minute’s applause was held before kick-off.
