The West Cumbria Youth County Age Group Cup finals produced three different clubs as winners.
Held at Lowca, the Under-12s, Under-14s and Under-16s saw Aspatria, Kells and Hensingham lift the respective trophies.
Possibly the most popular winners on the day were Aspatria, if only because it was their first trophy won in West Cumbria.
Chairman Mark Ridley said: “It’s our first trophy as a club since we won the Carlisle League in 1983/84. We have reached a few finals over the years but always finished as runners-up.
“This year we have grown our junior section from 40 to 105 and run Under-6s, Under-8s, Under-9s, Under-11s and Under-12s.

“This win by the Under-12s has given the club a great lift and it’s especially good to be competing with established teams.”
That was certainly true in the county final where they beat Kells 16-10, as the Hornets held off a fierce challenge in a nail-biting encounter.
Kells, running down the slope in the first half, exerted some extreme pressure on the Aspatria line but the Hornets managed to repel these attacks with some desperate defence.
Kells’ back-row trio were causing a lot of problems for Aspatria and they finally managed to get over the line to lead 4-0 through Rowan Henderson.

Aspatria were still in the game and Tom Hodgkinson scored a superb individual try from 50 metres out and left a trail of defenders in his wake to dot down under the posts. Riley Oliphant added the goal and Aspatria led 6-4 at half-time.
The second half saw more of the same with ferocious defence by both sides limiting attacking chances from both teams. It was Kells who broke the deadlock again when the impressive second rower Oliver Coombe scored a fine try and it was converted by JB Pears to make it 10-6.

Kells thought that they had extended their lead but the try was ruled out but Aspatria were in no mood to capitulate and hooker, Edward Barker, grabbed an opportunistic try from dummy half to level the scores. The kick was missed and tensions rose as the game entered its final stages.
The win was secured when hard-working prop, Benji Poland powered over the line and Billy Elliot added the goal.
Receiving the trophy was the Aspatria captain Will Beverley, a player with an impeccable rugby pedigree.
His grandfather was the late Harry Beverley, the former Dewsbury, Workington and England prop while his father Mark was a highly-rated Aspatria rugby union forward for many years.

In the Under-14s Kells battled their way to a 34-26 win against a highly rated Maryport side but it was a close run thing all the way through before the Whitehaven side edged clear.
Tries from Ashton Hetherington (2) and Rocco Wilson, with two conversions from Rhys Williamson helped Kells into a 16-12 lead at half-time.

In the second-half they added further tries from Harry Vaughan, Adam Reay and man of the match Williamson who converted all three tries.
The Maryport try scorers were their danger man Lucas Smiles (2), Olly Cartwright, Herbert Glaister and Owen Hadley. Liam Chilton kicked three goals.

Hensingham have a very talented Under-18s side, which landed the BARLA National Cup last week. Well, they may have another good side in the making as their Under-16’s won the County Cup in style.

They beat Wath Brow Hornets 38-8 in very convincing fashion with tries from man of the match Jackson Smith (3), Jack Carney (2), Beau Hyslop and Lewis Wood, with Smith adding five goals.

The Brow tries came from Toby Vine and Danny Riley.
