A Cumbrian bridge is in danger of catastrophic collapse – but people are removing barriers to continue to drive across it.
Holme Farm Bridge in Appleby was closed to pedestrians and vehicles last Wednesday after underwater investigations discovered one of the abutments has been undermined.
Westmorland & Furness Council said: “People should not be risking their own and others’ safety by removing the barriers.
“While the bridge may look safe, the issues are hidden underwater.”
Westmorland and Furness Council said its officers were now in discussions with the bridge owner about the next steps.
It added: “We understand the closure is inconvenient for some people but the bridge is not safe to cross in its current state.”
