For the first time in six seasons, Workington Zebras registered three successive wins at The Ellis as they kicked off 2026 with a comprehensive 61-12 victory against Penrith 2nds.
The Zebras helped themselves to nine clinically taken tries with Jack Todhunter, Tom Smith, Dan Hargreaves, Brandon Walker, Alex Nicholson, John McCrickerd and Owen Ackerley scoring one apiece, while Scott Faulkner went over twice. Walker and McCrickerd each added four conversions.
Penrith 2nds had their moments with several visits deep into Workington territory, but were frustrated by the determined defensive shield although they did snaffle two tries and a conversion.
The result lifts Workington up to 8th in Counties 1 Cumbria, seven points behind Egremont but with a game in hand.
By coincidence they travel to Egremont this Saturday, so they will be fired up for victory to close the gap.
A minute’s silence was held before the game in memory of Bobby Thompson.
