A warm evening at Upperby Social Club saw six matches contested in the Carlisle Individual Billiards League.
There were several impressive performances and high breaks recorded throughout the night.
Dave Turley moved to the top of the season’s high-break standings with excellent contributions of 53 and 60 in his victory over Mark Ballantyne, while Neil Walby was the evening’s highest scorer, compiling 378 points in his match against John Metcalfe.
Rob Woods also enjoyed a productive evening, securing a bonus point with a score of 338. His performance was highlighted by breaks of 29 and 30.
Paul Watson continued his strong start to the season, defeating Peter Marsden in a closely contested encounter.
The match remained evenly balanced for much of the evening before Watson produced a decisive break of 22 in the closing stages to secure victory.
Peter Stanyer demonstrated his trademark consistency, accumulating points through a steady stream of in-offs and cannons.
Mike Griffiths responded with some excellent potting throughout the contest, but Stanyer’s tactical and containing approach proved effective as he claimed a 306-223 win.
The closest match of the night came between David ‘Midge’ Midgley and Reuben Queen.
It was Queen who made the brighter start, compiling a break of 31 to establish an early lead of around 50 points.
Midge gradually worked his way back into the match with a series of breaks in the high teens, reducing the deficit to just two points heading into the closing stages.
In a dramatic finish, Queen produced a late contribution of 17 to edge one point ahead.
With only seconds remaining, Queen appeared set to snatch victory as he raced around the table attempting a straightforward in-off worth three points, only for the final buzzer to sound before the shot could be completed.
Midge therefore secured a narrow and fortunate 280-279 victory in one of the most exciting finishes seen for some time.
Attention now turns to the first round of the inaugural Cup competition, which takes place next week, with Second Division players drawn against their First Division counterparts.
